ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

The Department of English was started in1994, the year in which the college was established.

  • Initially it offered Part II English with two staff members to five UG programmes, now functions with 19 members of staff to teach 36 classes (2563 students).

Salient Features

    • The Department of English was established in the Year 1994.

 

    • It offers B.A English & M.A English

 

    • Our Department has 18 Teaching staff.

 

    • We have organised National &International Seminars Guest lectures , Online Webinars & Extension Activities .

 

    • Our Faculty members have published in Peer Reviewed Journal & Book Chapters.

 

    • So far, 23 Students have secured University Ranks.

 

    • First year students are enriched with LSRW Skills through Grammar classes on alternative saturdays.

 

    • Students are motivated to participate in Proficiency test & Creative writing conducted by Shakespeare Institute of English Studies, Chennai.

 

  • Text book for Part II English is published by the Department.

Our Vision

Transforming the women students hailing from the rural environment with poor communication skills, to excel in English communication and to buoy-up women in all fields where English plays a vital role.

Our Mission

To enhance the LSRW skills through constant and continuous practice using e-learning resources.
To enhance the communication skills and to instill self- confidence.
To develop the youth who have mental agility, physical dexterity, efficacy, reliability, confidence and capacity to face the future challenges.


Objectives

To enrich the vocabulary through English news paper reading.
To improve the communication skills through spoken English classes.
To utilize the facility of the language laboratory in optimum level to improve the LSRW skills.

Programme Outcome

  • Appreciate the evolution of the genres by various authors.

  • Obtain skills in Linguistics, Comparative Literature and gain practical exposure to ELT.

  • Progress the ability to evaluate critically the various works of different authors all over the world.

  • Develop LSRW skills, reasoning and aptitude to attend Competitive Examinations.

  • Appreciate the research knowledge and practice through the project work.

Programme Specific Outcome

  • Learnt to utilize LSRW Skills, to groom leadership quality and to become an entrepreneur.

  • Students will demonstrate understanding of the applications of numerical techniques for modeling physical systems for which analytical methods are inappropriate or of limited utility.

  • Gained practical exposure of the research process in the preparation of the project.

  • Cultured extra credit through Extra Disciplinary Course featuring digital skills.

Departmental Activities

Language Lab

  • Digital Language Laboratory Language lab is equipped with 60 Multimedia computers and a Sony Projector. The Configuration in the Computer is Dual Core 2.80 GHz, 512 MB RAM and 250 GB SATA Hard Disk. —No:4
  • A Student friendly software Learndiff is installed in the Lab. The Students could listen to Phonetics and word stress with appropriate intonations and tone group. They could also listen to conversations of various situations through Malayala Manorama“Speak English CDs” Regular training on Listening and Speaking skills are given to the first year PG students of all the departments

Future Plan

  • Teachers will be persuaded to appear for NET/SET Examinations so as to qualify themselves.
  • Library will be enriched with more research oriented books.
  • Proposed to conduct District Level Workshops.

Literary Club

  • Literary Club of English resumes its activities from 2011.
  • It aims to encourage our students to develop their taste for literature and also works towards improving their spoken as well as
  • Written language. Through this club regular oratory training is given to our I PG Students and organizes guest lecture every year.
