The technology of mushroom cultivation is provided to the Self Help Group periodically.

Tissue culture laboratory has 2 growing Rooms sufficient to culture 10000 plant cultures at any given time depending on the plant species under production.

The herbal garden generally consists of all the herbs which have medicinal and aromatic properties. Herbal gardens are the precious source of raw material for medicinal remedies used in primary health care.

Awareness of the use of medicinal and aromatic plants is increasing and hence becoming economically important due to growing demand for herbal products in the domestic and global market and over 90% of the medicinal plants are used by pharmaceutical industry.

The department maintains a herbal garden. It has 166 medicinal plants. Students collect various herbs from the herbal garden to promote phytochemical and pharmacological research.

The coconut plantations of Thanjavur District are frequently affected by Thanjavur Wilt, a fungal disease caused by Ganodermalucidum. Awareness of the disease, its impact, measures to prevent and control and the ways by which the productivity can be improved was given by the departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology to coconut cultivators of neighbouring villages.
